What is DeepL Write?
DeepL Write is the AI-powered writing assistant built by DeepL SE, the Cologne-based company best known for its machine translator. You paste a text and Write suggests an improved version: it fixes grammar, spelling and punctuation and offers alternative phrasings. It currently supports Chinese, English (British and American), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (European and Brazilian) and Spanish.
Unlike classic grammar checkers, which flag mistakes one at a time, Write rewrites the text directly and lets you pick between alternatives with a single click. Compared with Grammarly or LanguageTool it covers fewer languages, but it is built into the DeepL translator: same interface, same apps, same browser extensions.
Main Features
- Automatic corrections: grammar, spelling and punctuation fixed as you write
- One-click alternatives: synonyms for any word, whole-sentence rephrasing in English and German
- Styles and tones: four writing styles (academic, business, casual, simple) and four tones (friendly, confident, diplomatic, enthusiastic)
- Corrections-only mode: fixes errors without changing the style of the text
- Integrations: apps, browser extensions, Google Docs, Gmail and Microsoft Word
- Style rules and terms: with Write Pro, team guidelines and terminology are applied automatically
How Does DeepL Write Work?
You paste your text into the left-hand box, the language is detected automatically and the improved version appears on the right, with changes highlighted. Clicking a word brings up synonyms; whole-sentence rephrasing is only available in English and German.
Without an account you can work on texts of up to 1,500 characters at a time, while DeepL Pro subscribers get up to 2,000. With Write Pro the character limit disappears and your texts are not stored as long as you are logged into your account. Write is also available through the API, but only with a DeepL API Pro plan.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Natural rephrasing, not just error correction
- Free version that works even without an account
- Integrated with the DeepL translator, Google Workspace and Word
Cons:
- Only 11 language variants, far fewer than LanguageTool or Grammarly
- Without an account you are limited to 1,500 characters at a time
- Write Pro cannot be bought on its own: it requires a DeepL Pro subscription
Final Verdict
DeepL Write is a good choice for anyone who often writes in English, German or one of the other supported languages and wants smoother text without going sentence by sentence through a traditional grammar checker. The free version is enough for emails and short texts; Write Pro suits people who already pay for DeepL Pro, or companies that need unlimited text length and confidentiality. If you work across many languages, a multilingual checker is the better fit.
