What is Notion AI?
Notion AI is the set of artificial intelligence features built into Notion, the workspace that brings together docs, wikis, databases and project management. It isn't a separate app: the AI works directly inside the workspace's pages and databases, where it can write, summarize, find information and carry out tasks on the user's behalf through Notion Agent.
Compared with a generic chatbot, the advantage is context: answers are based on the content the team has already organized in Notion and, with Enterprise Search, on connected apps too. That's why it has taken hold mainly in companies that use Notion as the central store of internal knowledge.
Main Features
- Notion Agent: carries out multi-step tasks, such as creating pages, updating databases or gathering information scattered across the workspace
- Writing and editing: drafts text, improves style, translates and summarizes directly in the editor
- Enterprise Search: finds answers across the workspace and connected apps, pointing to the source pages
- AI Meeting Notes: transcribes meetings and prepares a summary with decisions and next steps
- Research mode: digs into a topic across multiple sources and returns a structured document
- AI in databases: automatically fills columns with summaries, keywords or translations for each row
How Does Notion AI Work?
Notion AI is opened from the sidebar, by pressing the space bar on an empty line, or by selecting text and choosing an action. You type a request in plain language, for example "summarize the decisions made in this month's meetings", and the AI answers using the pages the user can access, respecting the permissions already in place.
Notion Agent goes beyond a single answer: the agent creates and edits pages and fills in databases. Custom Agents, on the other hand, let you set up agents dedicated to recurring tasks, with credit-based usage billed separately.
Who is Notion AI for?
- Teams already using Notion as a company wiki or document archive
- Project managers running projects and tasks in Notion databases
- Companies wanting to search for information across Notion and their other work apps
- Professionals who write a lot and want faster drafts and revisions
- Teams with many meetings that need automatic minutes
Use Cases
- Finding a procedure buried in the documentation within seconds
- Turning a meeting into minutes with action items to assign
- Writing the first draft of a project document from scattered notes
- Summarizing and translating long pages for colleagues in other countries
- Filling in a feedback database with a category and summary for each entry
Pricing
Notion AI can no longer be bought as a separate add-on. The Free and Plus plans (the latter at $10 per user per month billed annually, $12 monthly) include only a limited trial of the AI. The full features, namely Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search and research mode, come with Business, at $20 per user per month billed annually ($24 monthly), and with Enterprise. Custom Agents cost $10 per 1,000 credits.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Works on the workspace's real content, not generic answers
- Brings writing, search, meeting notes and agents together in one tool
- Respects the access permissions already set in Notion
Cons:
- The full AI features require at least the Business plan
- Custom Agents carry a usage-based cost on top of the subscription
- Its value depends on how tidy and up to date the workspace is
Final Verdict
Notion AI works best for those who already use Notion as the hub of their teamwork: the richer and tidier the workspace, the more useful its answers and agents become. The main drawback is the entry cost, since the full AI starts with the Business plan; for solo users or those on cheaper plans, the included trial is enough to judge whether upgrading is worth the money.
