What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is the coding agent developed by Anthropic, the company behind the Claude models. It does more than suggest lines of code: it reads your entire project, edits files, runs terminal commands and integrates with Git, CI/CD and editors. You can use it from the terminal, through the VS Code and JetBrains extensions, in the Claude desktop app and from the browser.
Compared with editor-bound assistants such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor, Claude Code was designed as an autonomous agent: it takes a task, explores the code, plans the changes and applies them across multiple files, asking for confirmation before the more sensitive actions.
Main Features
- Whole-project understanding: reads the codebase and works across many files in one task
- File editing and command execution: writes code, runs tests and builds, and handles commits from the terminal
- Multiple surfaces: terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop app, browser and the Claude mobile app
- Project memory: persistent instructions in CLAUDE.md files plus automatic memory between sessions
- Automation: scheduled tasks, pull request reviews and integration with GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD
- Extensibility: MCP servers to connect external tools and the Agent SDK to build custom agents
How Does Claude Code Work?
You install it with one command on macOS, Linux or Windows, start it in your project folder and sign in with your Claude account. From there you describe what you need in plain language, for example fixing a bug or adding a feature: the agent explores the files, proposes a plan, applies the changes and can run the tests to check them. Sensitive actions require your permission.
Without the terminal, you can work in the Code tab of the desktop app, which shows diffs visually and runs sessions side by side, or from the browser, where long tasks run in the cloud on repositories that are not on your computer.
Who is Claude Code for?
- Developers who want to hand off whole tasks, not just get code completions
- Teams automating code reviews and issue triage
- Freelancers juggling several projects
- DevOps professionals managing scripts, configuration and deployments
- People with technical basics who want to build prototypes
Use Cases
- Fixing bugs starting from an error message or an issue report
- Adding features that touch several files in an existing project
- Writing and running tests, then fixing the ones that fail
- Getting to know an unfamiliar codebase and documenting it
- Automatically reviewing pull requests before they are merged
Pricing
Claude Code is not included in the free Claude plan. You need at least the Pro plan, at $20 per month or $17 per month with annual billing ($200 paid up front). Heavy users can choose Max: Max 5x at $100 per month and Max 20x at $200 per month, offering 5 and 20 times the usage of Pro respectively, plus priority access at high-traffic times.
Alternatively, you can use it with an Anthropic Console account and pay as you go at API rates. It is also included in the Team and Enterprise business plans. All subscriptions come with usage limits.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Works autonomously on complex tasks spread across many files
- Available in the terminal, editors, desktop and browser with the same configuration
- Extensive automation options and integrations with external tools
Cons:
- Not available on the free plan: you need at least Pro at $20 per month
- With heavy use the Pro limits run out quickly
- It can edit files and run commands, so every change should be reviewed before it ships
Final Verdict
Claude Code is one of the most complete coding agents available today, well suited to people who write code every day and want to delegate entire tasks. Pro is enough to get started; for many hours of use a day, Max is the better fit. If you need a free tool, look elsewhere.
